British and Axis propaganda were side to side during WW2. Both were trying to win the hearts of the Portuguese people. People in the streets were anxious to be informed the progress of the war. Censorship of the Portuguese Press prevented free information.
This photograph taken in 1940 shows crowdy citizens in Rossio reading the front pages of the newspapers. Antonio Telo [Propaganda e Guerra Secreta em Portugal, P&R, 1990, see cover here] was the first scholar to study these events.
